Hoping to recapture the carefree family trips of his childhood, Richard Newton (Judge Reinhold) rents an RV and packs up his anal-retentive wife Beth (Julia Sweeney), recalcitrant pre-teen Brennan (Joe Pichler), and camcord-toting daughter Sara (Michaela Gallo). The plan: to discover America while en route to a Newton reunion on the West Coast. Unfortunately, Richard faces a last-minute hitch when his Europe-based brother asks him to care for Beethoven, his St. Bernard. Although Richard deposits him at a kennel, Beethoven promptly runs away to join the Newtons on their cross-country journey. Although space is limited, the shaggy stowaway will more than compensate for his bulky presence, because two dimwit crooks are trailing them. Their criminal intent? To retrieve the DVD copy of THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST, encoded with valuable industrial info, accidentally purchased by the Newtons. Shamelessly ripping off elements of NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION and HOME ALONE, this dog-mestic comedy is aimed squarely at families whose lives revolve around their pets and children, in that order. The actors portraying the crooks perform in a hyperkinetic Keystone Cops style, but unfortunately the director has no talent for framing physical comedy. Mind you, it's all perfectly harmless family viewing, but to enjoy this bland diversion, it'll help if you've got fond memories of Lassie, Benji, and THE BRADY BUNCH; otherwise, you may feel like an alien visiting Planet Suburbia for the first time. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
