Although BEER isn't an average inane teen-sex comedy, it's certainly no shining example of the art of comic film. The story opens as Swit, a zealous ad executive, sets out to revive her company's sagging account with Mars's old family brewery. In the meantime Russ, a good ol' boy from Texas; Stein, a handsome Italian; and Grier, a well-dressed black lawyer, all end up drinking in the same bar. When a psychotic hoodlum tries to rob the place, they inadvertently save the day, becoming instant heroes. Tucker immediately hires them to do commercials. This is a largely predictable comedy that depends on stereotypes to carry much of the film's witless humor. The script and Patrick Kelly's direction are simplistic, but there are sporadic hints that BEER was intended to be a much more pointed satire. Swit proves thather television success was based more on luck than talent. Russ, Stein, and Grier fare better, considering they don't have to do much beyond look handsome. leave a comment
