A lavish remake of the 1924 silent starring John Barrymore, this film features Granger in the role of the audacious rags-to-riches dandy who becomes the chief adviser to the Prince of Wales, played to the pleasure-seeking hilt by Ustinov. Granger rises from poverty and--using borrowed money, gambling winnings, and the help of powerful friends met at private London casinos--meets Ustinov and quickly wins the favor of the future king. Blue-blooded Taylor also falls in love with Granger. When he finally confronts Ustinov with some truthful if indiscreet statements, Granger is banished. His pride will not let him seek help from his friends or from Taylor, and he dies in poverty in France, but not before king Ustinov visits him on his deathbed. Taylor's acting, despite her ravishing beauty, is an embarrassment, but the film is redeemed by Granger's sharply timed panache and bravado. The cinematography, sets, and costuming for this period chronicle of George Bryan Brummel are outstanding. The film was shot on location in England's lush countryside, and many of the interior shots were taken inside a perfectly intact 15th-century mansion, Ockwell Manor, located near Windsor Castle. leave a comment
