The talents on both sides of the camera are mildly impressive, but OFF BEAT is a bland, wholly contrived comedy that fails to deliver any solid humor. Abe Washington (Cleavant Derricks) is a undercover cop on the trail of a long-sought-after drug dealer. Just as he and his fellow officers
are about to take their man, Abe's buddy, Joe (Judge Reinhold), comes along and accidently blows his friend's carefully constructed cover. As a punishment, Abe is forcibly volunteered to audition for a benefit show that will feature a troupe of dancing cops. Figuring he owes his pal one, Joe
agrees to take Abe's place, though he's not thrilled about impersonating a police officer....
