Honeymooning in some unspecified Soviet satellite country, Ogilvy and Steele run off the road and plunge into a lake where, an opening flashback has shown, a witch was drowned in the 18th century. Ogilvy swims to safety, but Steele has vanished, her place taken by the hideous witch who goes on a murder spree against the descendants of her killers. Karlsen is a nobleman of an old witch-hunting, vampire-stalking family fallen on hard times under the new regime, who has stayed in Transylvania waiting for the witch to fulfill her curse.
