The title might make one think this was a middle-European horror story. It is, in fact, a slow re-creation of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. A Hungarian militarist (Mylong) has a daughter (Rensing) who is an ardent communist. She loves Mills, who comes from a liberal family headed by his professor-father, Hoyt.
