A far cry from the sweet nature adventures that Disney popularized, this is a sublime, graceful tale of human nature told, somewhat paradoxically, through the eyes of an animal. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud tells the story of an orphaned bear cub almost exclusively through visuals, using a bare minimum of dialogue and an elegantly constructed soundtrack composed from the "language" of the bears.
