Still afraid that British comedy is all intellectual innuendo and slyly sophisticated wordplay? Well, get over it: Mr. Bean (Black Adder's Rowan Atkinson) is the lost UK cousin Jim Carrey's DUMB AND DUMBER character is too dim-witted to know he has, a spastic moron who shaves his tongue, blows his nose like a geyser and can't use the men's room at a swank museum without appearing to hump the hand-drying machine. A longtime TV fixture in England and the U.S. (thank you, PBS), Mr. Bean makes his feature debut with this picture, and about all you can really say is that you either like this sort of thing or you don't. A half-witted and utterly incompetent museum guard, Bean is dispatched to the U.S. under false pretenses by a stuffy board of directors desperate to get rid of him without offending the bigwig whose inexplicable patronage he enjoys. Counting on American gullibility about all things English, the board fobs him off as a world-class art scholar on the Los Angeles museum that has just acquired "Whistler's Mother." The estimable Dr. Bean is to present the painting to the public, lending a sense of dignity and decorum to the otherwise carnival-like proceedings cooked up by overeager publicity and marketing departments. His bizarre behavior is at first excused as "eccentricity," though by the time he hocks a loogie on the priceless portrait this rationale is wearing more than a bit thin. Depending on your taste, either much hilarity or a tedious barrage of tasteless, juvenile pranking ensues. Trust your instincts. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
