Battle Of The Coral Sea

1959, Movie, NR, 80 mins

Undistinguished war film about the battle that turned the tide in the Pacific Theater in WW II. Kandel (whose father is Aben Kandel, also a screenwriter) turned out the story and cowrote the screenplay with Ullman. Together they missed the whole point of the fracas. The film concentrates on a submarine that recons the area before the battle. After that's done, the ship begin to return to port, but the crew members are captured and tossed into a Japanese prison where they are aided by Scala, as a Eurasian, who helps three officers flee the island on a torpedo boat. The men arrive home safely and inform their commanders about what's happening. Robertson is downright boring under Wendkos' languorous direction. Does the man ever smile? Best actors in the bunch are the Japanese; when a person watches a WW II film and begins rooting for the Japanese, you know something has gone wrong in the conception. There's just not enough battle in BATTLE OF THE CORAL SEA. leave a comment
