Mary Roberts Rinehart and Agatha Christie were cut from the same cloth: musty velvet. Both loved the old-dark-house story, replete with weird characters, creaking doors, etc. The Bat is a killer who likes his murder in a jugular vein. He rips throats when he isn't searching for one million dollars' worth of securities stashed in the house.
