This fascinating film explores the lives of three aging musicians, members of a world-famous string quartet, who suddenly find themselves adrift when their lead violinist dies. They try to go their separate ways but are drawn back together by youthful prodigy Malet, who persuades them to reorganize, with him as lead violin. The others are amazed at his playing and are even more amazed at his off-stage life--which includes bedding groupies, smoking marijuana, and more. The others, who have denied themselves such pleasures for years, find their sacrifices rendered pointless. The nagging notion even creeps into their heads that Malet plays so brilliantly because he indulges in earthly delights. BASILEUS QUARTET raises a number of questions about aging, art, and self-expression, and does so with some beautiful performances (especially that of Antonutti, who acted in PADRE PADRONE), great music (Beethoven, Paganini, Debussy, et al.), and stunning locations (Paris, Vienna, Geneva, Venice).
