The Bashful Elephant

1962, Movie, NR, 82 mins

Most of this movie has to do with the elephant trainer's romance and should have been edited out; however, that would have left very little film on the reel. This is supposedly a moppet movie, with Molly Mack as a sweet, innocent homeless child looking for foster parents in Austria. It involves crossing the Iron Curtain, a helpful dog, and an elephant. The title is totally misleading in that it makes one think of Disney, Dumbo, etc. This elephant is hardly bashful, and the overlay of the secondary story takes it out of the realm of FKO (For Kiddies Only) and makes it far more adult. Former boxer Buddy Baer (brother of Max Baer and uncle to Max Baer, Jr., of "The Beverly Hillbillies" TV show) is about the only face you'll recognize--unless, of course, you are really up on your Austrian screen actors. leave a comment
