Quinn is the murderer and thief pardoned in place of Christ. He wrings every emotion out as he is trapped in a mine collapse, stoned, fights a gladiator, and escapes death by cross, arrow, and lions. It's technically good but terribly long, and Fry's screenplay seems to have been written under the influence of too much capuccino. Lots of spectacular sequences including the burning of Rome (always popular in these kinds of epics), the arena, sweating in the sulphur mines, etc. Director Fleischer earns his money in this one. Sort of an all-star-cast, which means not quite as big a roster of names as Irwin Allen usually offers. Silvana Mangano (wife of the producer) is Gassman's former girl friend who has turned to Christ. Gassman is Quinn's cellmate and does a fine job. Palance is the mean gladiator who enjoys hurting and killing people. He is most believable. Lots of violence in this movie as is usual in stories taken from that most violent of all books, the Bible. Kennedy plays Pontius Pilate with just the right note of smarminess, and Jurado and Borgnine (who liked to work together at the time because they were married) also turn in good jobs. Odd that the role of Christ gets billing near the bottom of the cast line. He's played by Roy Mangano, brother to the female lead and brother-in-law of the producer. Nepotism is here to stay. leave a comment
