THE BANDIT OF ZHOBE is an American western in every sense of the word. It has the jut-jawed hero (Mature), the sweet young thing (Aubrey), and the dumb comic relief that embarrasses viewers (Newley). Yes, it's a true western except that it all takes place in Inja (never India). The story by Richard Maibaum (who was still working for Broccoli in the mid-1980s, doing James Bond screenplays) has Mature as an Indian leader whose family as been wiped out by the British. Truth is, it wasn't the British at all but a rival group of Indians wearing British red coats. By the time the picture is over, the misunderstanding is rectified and everyone shakes hands. Mature (who got his big break on Broadway in "Lady in the Dark" as the handsome Hollywood hunk) is a bit long in the tooth and thick in the waist to play roles with this much derring-do. Newley, who began as The Artful Dodger in the original OLIVER TWIST, does his usual mugging act and is tiresome. It's all chase and melodrama with little care for characterizations. leave a comment
