Woody Allen is Fielding Mellish, a neurotic New Yorker who's enamored of a political activist, Nancy (Louise Lasser, Allen's wife at the time), who'll have nothing to do with him because she's totally immersed in the revolution taking place in the banana republic of San Marcos. Wearing Castro-like fatigues and a false red beard, Allen accidentally winds up as president of San Marcos. He returns to the US, is unmasked as a fraud, tried for subversion, and winds up marrying Nancy.
