THE BALTIMORE BULLET is a combination of THE HUSTLER, ROCKY, and about 20 other pictures, but that's okay, because it's sort of fun. Producer-cowriter John F. Brascia, a former ballroom dancer, decided to make this movie about his second love--pool. Nick Casey (James Coburn) takes Billie Joe Robbins (Bruce Boxleitner) under his wing and, when they meet in the ultimate match, informs his pupil that "I taught you everything you know, kid. But I didn't teach you everything I know." Many real pool champs, including Steve Mizerak and Irving Crane, appear; Omar Sharif is the bad guy with a behemoth, frightening henchman (Jack O'Halloran); and Ronee Blakely improves on her NASHVILLE work. The film's major problem is that Nick appears to have just a little too much class to be a frazzled pool hustler. A few cheap misogynist jokes may offend some viewers. leave a comment
