Filmed in 1982, BALBOA was originally conceived as a possible series for cable television that would take the machinations of network shows such as "Dallas" and "Dynasty" a step further by including foul language and nudity. There were no takers in Cable Land, so the producers pared the film down to feature length. Curtis is an unscrupulous wheeler-dealer in the chic Balboa district of California. He attempts to build a legalized gambling empire on nearby Goat Island. Out to get Curtis, however, are Campbell, the granddaughter of a man Curtis ruined financially, and Peterson, Curtis' ex-wife. BALBOA is filled with so many muddled characters and plot twists that one needs a scorecard to keep things straight. Characters jump in and out of bed, double-cross, plot, scheme, and vow revenge every few minutes. Everyone looks embarrassed to be involved in this mess, and they probably hoped it would stay unreleased. leave a comment
