Eddy (who looks naked without Jeanette MacDonald) is a Russian prince masquerading as a member of the proletariat in order to get close to Massey, a singer at a local cafe. Eddy arranges for Massey to have her debut at the Imperial Opera but on that very night, Eddy's father is shot by Red assassins, one of whom is Massey's father. The story swings from pre-revolutionary Russia to pre-World War II Paris. Massey goes to Siberia with other members of her family, but they are freed when the Revolution occurs. Eddy, on the other hand, flees to Paris and becomes a celebrity singer while working in a boite owned by a onetime Russian nobleman (Ruggles). It's a lavish picture, filled with music; Eddy's rendition of "Silent Night" is memorable and one of his best moments on screen. Massey was expected to become the next Garbo. She was attractive, personable, and had a fine figure, but never achieved her expected fame, and was soon doing second-rate horror films that were far beneath her abilities. But in BALALAIKA, she was young, had stars in her eyes, and the world was hers...for a while. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Sound. leave a comment
