What a pleasant relief to see a good western again. After HEAVEN'S GATE and THE MISSOURI BREAKS, here comes BAKER'S HAWK. Hoodlum vigilantes are trying to get Ives, a recluse who would just like to be left alone, out of the neighborhood. Montgomery befriends the old coot and then enlists the aid of Walker, his father, in helping to foil the villains. This film reverts to the style of earlier days in westerns, when men were men and women were women and the old values, ethics, and morals were easily recognizable. (This was long before westerns became psychological and boring.) A well-photographed film with lots of natural footage, good animal shots, and sincerity that can be felt in every frame. The score by De Azevedo is just right, as are all other technical credits. Kudos to Doty-Dayton for proving that a good western can be made without sacrificing taste. leave a comment
