Writer Monash has done what many might have considered impossible: he took several interesting characters, added a test pilot background, and made it all come out dull. Monash, who later went on to produce TV's "Peyton Place," betrays his soap-opera leanings with a tiring story about Payne and the development of a special ejection seat for fighter planes. Payne is called back to the service, much to his chagrin. When two other pilots are out of the running (one dies of a broken neck, the other has an emergency operation), Payne must show his mettle.
