Thrill-seeking artist Grandgil (Jean Gabin) joins meek cabbie Martin (Bourvil) to transport four suitcases of freshly butchered pork across Paris during the German occupation. What follows are a number of episodes--some comic, some tragic--in which the pair must avoid various inquiries, police confrontations, and even hungry dogs with keen noses. Bourvil gives one of the best performances of his career as the basically honest cabbie driven by circumstances to working in the black market, a performance which earned him the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. The direction, on the other hand, is less than compelling--the transitions between comic and dramatic episodes are weak, the characterizations are flabby, and the plot hobbles along to its rather predictable conclusion.
