An adorable oddity. Director Percy Adlon's first English-language film is set in a run-down motel in the middle of the Mojave Desert and, like his earlier art-house hit SUGARBABY, stars the uniquely talented Marianne Sagebrecht. Jasmin Munchgstettner (Sagebrecht), a German hausfrau, is abandoned in the desert after an argument with her husband. After wandering for some time under the scorching sun, Jasmin checks into a dusty motel run by Brenda (CCH Pounder), a tough-talking, no-nonsense woman who treats her new boarder like some sort of space alien. With time, however, the pair become the best of friends, turning the decrepit diner into the most exciting place west of Las Vegas, and Jasmin becomes one of the most popular entertainers for miles around--especially catching the fancy of Rudi Cox (Jack Palance), a cosmic romantic who desperately wants to paint her portrait. BAGDAD CAFE is a visually exhilarating and consciously modern film, more concerned with projecting an atmosphere or spirit than with telling a story. It's hard not to fall in love with this comic fable about the magic that develops at the meeting of two cultures. leave a comment
