Brand leads a bushel-basket-full of the sleaziest outlaws. They are lurking outside Abilene and waiting for a trainload of gold to come chugging through. Montgomery would like to gull the outlaws into Abilene, where they can be ambushed and more easily dealt with. The locals are against it, even though the outlaws dominate the town. They are finally convinced, the battle takes place, and all ends well. The film is notable in that it uses the characters of Earp, Garrett, Masterson, and Cody--any one of whom would be enough to carry the story. But the producers, not adhering to the architectural doctrine that "less is more" opted for "more is more" and gave us this plot. Hampton writes a good, tight screenplay, and this is a better-than-average western with lots of excitement, suspense, and action. This picture was made in the days when everyone hoped they could get a hit title song (as with HIGH NOON), so the Mellowmen sing producer Kent's original ditty. leave a comment
