Next to Shane, this was probably Alan Ladd's finest western performance, and Ernest Borgnine's best role since Marty. If the story — about a ex-con (Ladd) who who plots to rip off the rich mine owner (Kent Smith) who did him wrong — feels familiar, there's a very good reason. It's essentially the plot of the W.R.
