They tried to do another sequel to THE FRENCH CONNECTION and failed with BADGE 373. Was it because they had different actors, different screenwriters, different directors, and different studios? Could be. Both FRENCH CONNECTION movies were made at Fox with Hackman, and the first one took four Oscars. BADGE 373 takes the cake for boredom. Duvall is an angry cop similar to the Kirk Douglas role in DETECTIVE STORY, except that Duvall is a foul-mouthed, pot-bellied bigot, raiding illegally, double-crossing friend and foe alike. He's a sociopath who hates Puerto Ricans, which, in New York, can limit your acquaintances. His character is supposedly patterned after the real-life Eddie Egan (who plays Scanlon and also is billed as tech advisor). The biggest surprise is real-life Puerto Rican activist Felipe Luciano (as Ruben), who comes across with the only conviction on-screen. Bloom does her hapless role in the only way she knows how--with intelligence. Screenwriter Pete Hamill plays a reporter named Pete and is believable as a reporter; unfortunately, he was not as believable as a screenwriter. Howard Koch (Sr.) directed for maximum yawns. leave a comment
