Few films have ever been as appropriately named as this all-out gorefest from New Zealand. The story follows four men who are sent by the government to Kaihoro, a small community in New Zealand, to investigate the disappearance of the town's population. As it happens, aliens have overrun the community. Not only are the aliens a violent lot, they consider human flesh a delicacy, which provides the filmmakers with an excuse to present some thoroughly revolting visuals. Before it ever reached the US, BAD TASTE was wildly anticipated by gorehounds who were excited by reports from New Zealand that this was a truly disgusting effort. They weren't disappointed. As a showcase of squirting blood, exploding innards, dismemberment, and bodily secretions, BAD TASTE certainly lives up to its name and reputation. The gory tedium is relieved by so little dialog that the film could be viewed entirely without sound--which would spare viewers from the horribly graphic noises that accompany the sight of oozing wounds or dismemberments by chainsaw. BAD TASTE was probably intended as camp, but its humor falls flat even as a parody of the horror genre. It is best viewed as a film strictly for movie makeup and special-effects aficionados. leave a comment
