Bad Men Of Missouri

1941, Movie, NR, 75 mins

Solid story dealing with the notorious Younger brothers, albeit the facts are highly distorted. Morgan, Kennedy, and Morris take up the outlaw trail after northern carpetbaggers pillage their lands and cruelly kill friends and family. By accident, they meet Baxter, a weird Jesse James, who is robbing a train Morgan and gang intend to rob. (The James and Younger brothers were united from their beginnings as members of Quantrill's guerrillas during the Civil War and were even distantly related; they rode together until the Youngers were captured after the disastrous raid against a Northfield, Minnesota, bank in 1878, the James boys escaping.) The film begins with Civil War battle scenes culled from D.W. Griffith's silent classic, THE BIRTH OF A NATION. More accurate profiles of these notorious bandits are found in JESSE JAMES; THE GREAT NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA RAID; and THE LONG RIDERS. Director Enright moves this version along speedily. leave a comment
