To capitalize on the media attention given to foreign medical schools after the US invaded the small Caribbean island of Grenada (ostensibly to rescue 600 American students from a communist takeover), 20th Century-Fox ground out this unfunny comedy. It takes place at a Central American medical school that caters to American students unable to gain admission to colleges stateside. Steve Guttenberg is a young man who ends up at one such medical school, which is run by the dictator of the country, Alan Arkin. On arrival, Guttenberg discovers Arkin runs the medical school like a boot camp. Once the initial shock wears off, Guttenberg makes friends with Julie Hagerty, a young nurse who wants to be a doctor. The noble med students decide to subvert Arkin's despotic rule by setting up a secret hospital to help peasants. The laughs are few and far between in BAD MEDICINE. Arkin, as usual, is wasted here, as is Hagerty. Director Harvey Miller shows little talent behind the camera and lets his script wallow in obnoxious humor. leave a comment
