Huston is the only reason to sit through this western as he plays the swaggering Mexican bandit Lopez eventually shot to pieces by Texas Rangers. Remade from a silent film, the script suffers from the melodramatic plotting that characterized the worst films of that era. Inexplicable
attraction to this material was demonstrated by a remake in 1937 as WEST OF SHANGHAI and again in 1941. Director Badger worked on the classic silent IT (1927).
