Not Bad For A Girl

First-time filmmaker Dr. Lisa Apramian, PhD, has subtitled her documentary An Analytic Approach to the Functions of Music and Gender Deconstruction. It's not, but it is an interesting record of the growing presence of women in the traditionally male-dominated field of rock'n'roll. Apramian intercuts live concert footage and interviews with Joan Jett, Courtney Love and members of such bands as L7, Babes in Toyland and Lunachicks. She gets beyond the novelty appeal of "chicks with guitars," and gives the women an opportunity to do something they're rarely allowed to do in the mainstream press: talk.
