This adaptation tells the story of a young woman, Eilers, who meets a young man, Dunn, on a Coney Island boat, goes home with him, and is indiscreet enough to conceive a child out of wedlock. The couple marry one step ahead of the obstetrician, and Dunn must give up his lifelong dream of
owning his own radio store to provide for his new bride and child. He even goes so far as to enter himself in a boxing match to win $40 to pay the doctor bills. This slightly dated but touching melodrama was quite popular in its time and earned Academy Awards for Best Direction and Best Screen
Adaptation, as well as a nomination for Best Picture.
