BAD COMPANY

A highly engaging sleeper. Draft dodging is evidently an old American custom, according to this screenplay by Benton and Newman, the duo who scripted BONNIE AND CLYDE. Marking Benton's directorial debut, BAD COMPANY is a comedy-drama about the Civil War equivalent of the Viet Nam protesters. Instead of going north to Canada, these young men wend their ways west. Bridges, Brown, Houser, Cofer, Savage, and Lewis are a bunch of young Easterners who drift out beyond the Mississippi and encounter several adventures. A segmented movie, BAD COMPANY manages to sustain interest through deft direction and an intelligent screenplay. The movie shows the down side of the Old West: deprivation, the cold, the murders, and very little of the dime-novel glamour that young men read about in their gaslit Manhattan rooms. It's a mixture of comedy and drama--and when it's funny, it's terrific. leave a comment
