Originally made for TV as a "Virginian" episode that introduced the characters from another Universal TV series, "Laredo," BACKTRACK was eventually released as a feature. Chase, a first-rate western writer (RED RIVER; LONE STAR; MONTANA), did the script. McClure is sent to Mexico by Drury (in a very small role) to get a bull. During the trip, McClure gets involved with the Texas Rangers, helping them investigate a train that has been robbed. All of the passengers were murdered except for a tiny baby. The action-packed picture then offers encounters with perfidious villains (Lamas is terrific as an unscrupulous Mexican captain) and attractive women (Fleming is the tough owner of a saloon; Lupino gloriously overplays a south-of-the-border widow with a passion for Brand). There are also good performances by Dano and Smith. leave a comment
