Revel without a cause. Trashy cult director Waters, now in the mainstream, returns to his Baltimore home turf in this rock 'n' roll take on star-crossed lovers, caught in the cultural tug-of-war between hipsters and squares. The film is high on energy, color and camera movement and, as
usual in Waters's world, everything is styled within an inch of its life, capturing all the fun and fever of the 1950s. But underneath the numerous entertaining cameos, not much is going on, and it shows. The film's terrific first half-hour can't sustain itself. Depp is nice to look at, but too
diminutive to bring much force to his sexy biker. Locane is well, okay, but she's eclipsed...
