Steve McQueen stars in this bleak drama as Henry Thomas, an aspiring country and western singer with a mean streak. As the film opens, he has just been released from a Texas prison where he has been jailed due to a stabbing incident. He is met by his wife, Georgette (Remick), and six-year-old daughter, Margaret Rose (Block), and attempts to go straight. He is hindered in his efforts by Miss Kate (Simmons), an old maid who raised him after his parents died. Henry wants to resume his pursuit of a singing career, but Miss Kate won't hear of it, threatening to see that he goes back to jail if he starts singing in local dives again. McQueen is at home in the role of the taciturn, alienated Henry and Remick is fine too, but one wonders just what she sees in this guy anyway. The film's biggest problem is that it is simply too relentlessly grim to be entertaining. leave a comment
