Baby Face Nelson

Nothing resembling the facts concerning 1934's Public Enemy No. 1 can be seen in this inexpensive hard-boiled production, but Rooney, as the psychopathic Nelson (real name Lester Gillis), gives a convincing performance. He is released from prison, going to work for de Corsia. After some capers, the mob boss, realizing that a maniac is in his employ, turns him in to the police. Rooney escapes, kills de Corsia, then takes up with Jones, de Corsia's mistress. He joins the Dillinger gang in a series of ruthless robberies, finally killing anyone getting in his way, including Hardwicke, who is an underworld doctor who once saved his life.
