Away All Boats

1956, Movie, NR, 114 mins

In the South Pacific during WW II, hardened Navy captain Jeb Hawks (Jeff Chandler) trains a bunch of green sailors on the attack transport USS Belinda. To keep his men from fighting among themselves, Hawks plays the role of a self-centered, elitist snob, prompting the sailors to direct their anger at him. Former Merchant Marine Dave MacDougall (George Nader) picks up on Hawks's game, however, and clues in his shipmates, who grow to understand and respect their captain. Then, under attack, the crew pulls together in the great tradition of the US Navy. More or less a wide-screen advertisement for the seafaring branch of the armed forces (as TO HELL AND BACK was for the Army), AWAY ALL BOATS becomes overly involved in heavy-handed melodrama, detracting from the thrills provided by some of the battle scenes. leave a comment
