Despite his failure to establish comic credentials in RHINESTONE 1984), OSCAR (1991) and STOP OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT (1992), Sylvester Stallone once again goes for the laughs in this dismal mob picture. Years ago, a rival pinned the murder of Sammy Carboni on Godfather Angelo Allegheri (Anthony Quinn), and Sammy's Sammy's son, Gianni, vowed to exact revenge. Frankie Delano (Sylvester Stallone) has spent his life safeguarding Angelo and Angelo's daughter, Jennifer (Madeleine Stowe). Jennifer, who was raised by WASP parents, knows nothing about the truth of her origins and after Angelo is killed by a hit man (Billy Gardell), Frankie steps out of the shadows and tells Jennifer who he is and what he's doing. A neurotic mess, Jennifer can barely handle the news that her husband is a philanderer, let alone the revelation that she's a Mafia princess. But a videotape prepared by Angelo in the case of just such an eventuality convinces her that it's the truth. Jennifer certainly doesn't want a full-time bodyguard, even one as beefy and solicitous as Frankie. Once she's ditched her cheating husband, Jennifer falls for suave Italian romance novelist Marcello (Raul Bova), who lectures at her book club. Frankie has suspicions about Marcello, but his job is to stay on the sidelines. Frankie rescues Jennifer from a string of threats, and with many of Angelo's enemies terminated, allows her to visit Italy with Marcello. Naturally, the writer is rather more than he appears to be and Frankie, who's secretly smitten with Jennifer, must protect her from her own foolish heart. This farcical flop benefits from a fine cast of supporting players, but director Martyn Burke not only misuses Stallone but also encourages Stowe to scream her way through light comedic moments meant to be whispered. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
