Autumn Sonata

The meeting of the Bergmans is reason alone to see AUTUMN SONATA, the director's exploration of mother-daughter conflict, but whatever cohesion the film projects is a result of Ingrid Bergman, as magnetic as ever in her final film performance. Photographed beautifully by Sven Nykvist, this painful film compels audiences finally to turn away. There is too much talk, talk, talk about feelings and not enough demonstration of them, but like cream, Ingrid keeps rising to the top of the chatter.
