At the end of the 19th century in a rural Texas town, teacher Bagdasarian takes over the town's newspaper after her father passes away. The paper is close to folding because the community produces no news, but unusual events quickly change things. One of Bagdasarian's students, Smith, discovers a spaceship near some Indian burial mounds. She gets a quick glimpse of its passenger, then retrieves an unusual crystal egg it has left behind. Meanwhile the alien, a short, bald-headed creature with pointy ears and a jewel-encrusted outfit, has gone off to play checkers with Elam, a delightful old codger. Bagdasarian learns about these encounters and suddenly has fodder for her paper. The story unfolds simply, without delving into the characters or their motivations in any great detail. Everyone fits a type, with acting that ranges from good to dreadful. Choppy editing occasionally confuses the plot line, and the special effects are laughable. leave a comment
