After all but ruining his last two U.S. releases ( NIXON and THE INNOCENT) with ludicrously hammy displays of Master Thespianism, Anthony Hopkins settles down long enough to enact a sturdy Welsh version of Uncle Vanya. Hopkins directs himself, as well as a uniformly
excellent supporting cast, in this polished updating of Chekhov's domestic drama. Maybe we're being churlish, but now that we've had three cleverly ironized reinventions of
Vanya in three years (see VANYA ON 42ND STREET; COUNTRY LIFE), is it too much to ask that somebody do the damn thing
straight?
