The happy lives of ritzy New York City couple Mason and Beck are disrupted when stranger Hopkins appears, claiming that their daughter, Swift, is the reincarnated spirit of his dead little girl. They dismiss his strange tale then begin to notice that their daughter has been acting a little odd lately. A surprisingly weak outing for veteran director Wise, whose CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (1944); THE BODY SNATCHER (1945); and THE HAUNTING (1963) are classics of the horror genre. Part of the problem is De Felitta's script that is based on his own feeble novel, which is almost evangelical in its promotion of belief in reincarnation. To his credit, Wise took a subtle approach to the material, but AUDREY ROSE remains a rather uninteresting tale of the supernatural and contains little of what made THE HAUNTING so successful. leave a comment
