Set during the Nazi occupation of France, Louis Malle's semi-autobiographical film is an exceptionally moving reminiscence of a boyhood friendship cut short by war. Gaspard Manesse stars as a privileged 12-year old at a provincial Catholic boarding school who befriends a new arrival (Raphael Fejto) who is cultivated, literate and oddly circumspect about revealing his background.
