The Atomic Brain: Review

Cinematographer Joseph V. Mascelli, the man who shot Ray Dennis Steckler's classic THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE CREATURES WHO STOPPED LIVING AND BECAME MIXED-UP ZOMBIES (1965) and wrote an essential handbook for professional cinematographers, branched off on his own to cowrite and direct this obscure mad scientist epic. Marjorie Eaton plays a wealthy but aging widow seeking eternal youth. She employs a mad doctor (Frank Gerstle), to put her brain into the body of a young woman--any young, beautiful woman will do--and he operates on three abducted females, two of whom become zombies that kill off townsfolk. The third victim is his own pet project; he inserts a cat's brain into the woman and she turns into a carnivorous feline. While Mascelli's cinematography was surprisingly good on the Steckler films, he's not much of a director. Worthwhile if taken as camp. leave a comment
