It's 1943 and Hitler's forces are in Italy crushing a rebellion against Mussolini's fascist rule. The story takes place in the tranquil village of Assisi, where padre Cross runs the Franciscan mission of San Damiano. From bishop Mason (in one of his final assignments) the priest learns Rome's Jews are racing away from the German invaders, trying to get to the port of Genoa to board ships from neutral countries. Naturally, Mason chooses the brave and capable Cross to help the fleeing Jews.
