An old man's obstinate refusal to change his standards runs up against modern pragmatism. Jewel is a groundskeeper who has been tending the same small cricket field for almost 50 years, refusing both to tilt the field to favor the home team (as his detractors insist every other team
does) and to retire so that team owner Elphick can spend less on maintenance and more on players and comforts for the fans. A government program forces Arthur to take on a black youth as an assistant, and he goes out of his way to make the lad, Blackwood, uncomfortable. Predictably, by the end of
the film Jewel has seen the light and has turned into a lovable codger.
