Heston is an Indian-hating cavalry scout (his role based on the life of Al Sieber) who particularly loathes Apaches, stating to one and all that he knows this Indian tribe, having been raised by them. The story centers upon the return of De Kova's tribe to the reservation and Palance's return to his tribe from an eastern prison where, being held as an incorrigible, he has learned the white man's ways. Heston brands Palance a renegade. But Heston is ignored and then fired from his post when he persists in telling the military that Palance will lead the tribe to war. James and Hogan are named scouts for the cavalry but Hogan betrays the troop as they rendezvous with Palance for a peace meeting. Heston arrives to help the troopers counterattack and finally, in a hand-to-hand battle, kills Palance, which brings about peace. Though the tale is often far-fetched, it is nevertheless based on fact and Heston's performance is fascinating in its offbeat appeal of a truculent rebel. Keith is a strong second lead as Heston's officer friend. Katy Jurado plays a treacherous, backstabbing halfbreed mistress of Heston with such conviction that she appears to enjoy the viperous role. Love interest is nil with Mary Sinclair as Heston's white woman, a part she enacts with the zeal of an ostrich. leave a comment
