Heston is an Indian-hating cavalry scout (his role based on the life of Al Sieber) who particularly loathes Apaches, stating to one and all that he knows this Indian tribe, having been raised by them. The story centers upon the return of De Kova's tribe to the reservation and Palance's return to his tribe from an eastern prison where, being held as an incorrigible, he has learned the white man's ways. Heston brands Palance a renegade. But Heston is ignored and then fired from his post when he persists in telling the military that Palance will lead the tribe to war.
