With Carradine, Van Cleef, and Mako in the cast, this had the potential of a better-than-average low-budget action film. Unfortunately a poor script and downright bad performances from some supporting players undermine the film's potential. Japanese yakuza leader Mako needs to find a valuable jade statue and hires private detective Goss and his sleazy partner, Hagen, to pay the crooks who have the statue $500,000 for it. When Goss runs into problems, the rest of the family gets involved--retired cop father (Van Cleef) and older brothers (Carradine and Huff), both Vietnam vets. Dull and utterly predictable, ARMED RESPONSE is nearly saved by a self-deprecating sense of humor that employs some funny dialog and a sense of film history. What could have been an interesting look at the rivalry between the Japanese and Chinese underworlds is only talked about, and the film becomes simply a family-revenge tale. leave a comment
