Epic western originally intended for Gary Cooper became Holden's first horse opera which is built mostly around Arthur as Tucson's first female citizen, a hellcat who bests bad men at every turn. Holden appears as a wanderer heading for California, catching Arthur's eye and winning her heart so that she abandons her breeches for dresses, but she can't turn him from his wanderlust. He departs and she throws herself into the task of establishing a freight line which William and Hall attempt to destroy. But Holden returns to help Arthur battle the villains. The film suffers from overlong scenes, albeit the photography is superb, reflecting meticulous period sets and majestic scenery; much of this film was later used by Columbia as stock footage for its low-budget programmers, one way execs thought to recoup the studio's then-hefty budget of $2 million. Director Ruggles, who triumphed with CIMARRON in 1931, employed hundreds of Tucson natives as extras and was a stickler for accuracy, a penchant that sometimes slows down the pace and zigzags the story line. The film is nevertheless an enjoyable big western with plenty of action. It was nominated for Oscars for art direction and original score. leave a comment
